Polaroid Book Review by Brigitta Isabella

The fast development of the digital camera in photography obviously doesn’t make Polaroid Camera lose its fans. Though it’s very hard to find Polaroid films now (especially in Indonesia), taking a portrait with a Polaroid camera and feeling the film comeout from the camera is still something that some people have a romantic nostalgia for. Eventhough the digital world has quickly developed and maybe the real “instant” is now established, Polaroid Camera is still the one in the heart of the people who love this camera’s uniqueness.

The idea about  instant cameras first came from Edwin H. Land, a scientist and the founder of the Polaroid corporation. Since he invented the technology of  the one-step-photography in 1947, Clarence Kennedy, a bussines colleague of Land’s who was also an art historian knew that Land had to meet Ansel Adams. Ansel Adams is a well known photographer, he is a genius and has many briliant works. After they met and had a long talk, they realized how much they admired each others work. Land cooperated with Adams because he realized that this technology of instant photography wouldn’t mean anything without any creative potential from the artist. This warm realtionship between Land and Adams was like a collaboration between art and industry. Adams then became the co-worker for Polaroid corporation as an artist consultant.

Adams then made a big project, he gathered young and potential artists such as David Hockney, Helmut Newton, Jeanloup Sieff, and Robert Rauschenberg to produce art with the Polaroid camera. Landa and Adams believed that pictures provided by the Polaroid Camera also should receive appreciation like  high art quality.Promoted by Land, Adamsgatherd collected Polaroid works from the young artist. The uncountable works then curated by Barbara Hitchcock and published as The Polaroid Book, contained 400 works from various artists. Hitchcock also wrote the history of Polaroid and how the Polaroid Book came to be published.

Looking back on the works in  this book made me very surprised. I never realized how this simple instant camera could make high quality works of art! I thought the Polaroid camera is only used by tourists who want to take their picture some place, even my grandmother can use it. So when  the camera is used by the right hand, the output can be very different and nicer, i believe. Please take a look at some wonderful works in this books.

These works are only some of so many nice and wonderful works in this books. There are so many creative concepts and experiments in every work. For some artists, the Polaroid print is an unfinished canvas, begging for personal touch. Many of them draw on the Polaroid print or  experiment in the transfer process and establishes a dreamy or strange colour in the print that gives us a different visual experience. From this moment, Edwin H. Land has reached his dream to make Polaroid works an art form that could be compared with other high art in museums or galleries.
So how is the Polaroid corporation nowadays? In 2002 this company went bankruptand most of the business had been sold to Bank One’s One Equity Partners (OEP). OEP Imaging Corporation then changed its name to Polaroid Holding Company (PHC). By that time, PHC also manufactured LCD, plasma tv, digital cameras and other electronic stuff under the Polaroid brand for distribution internationally. The new Polaroid corporation also introduced PoGo, a credit-card-sized instant photo printer that  it used to replace the conventional Polaroid camera. In 2008 the Polaroid corporation announced that the company decided to gradually cease production and withdraw from analog instant film products completely.

This may disappoint many Polaroid lovers. The uniqueness of this instant photograph couldn’t be replaced by any digital technology. The originality of Polaroid photographs is also one of this camera’s eminence, we cannot produce two photos that are exactly the same. This thing is really different with a digital file which we can print over and over. In some discussion forums i read that there were so many people who still cared about Polaroid’s existence. They made some kind of petition asking the Polaroid corporation to not stop the production of cameras and Polaroid films. I dont know what the outcome or progress from this petition is.

It so sad if Polaroid camera and Polaroid films have to disappear. Using a Polaroid camera is not  just about the technique or a  fast way to get photographs. It’s about the feeling, how we fall in love with the camera, the color tone and the vintage style of Polaroid camera, even though the real instant is in front of our eyes.

Berkembangnya kamera digital di dunia fotografi ternyata tidak membuat kamera polaroid kehilangan penggemarnya. Ditengah sulitnya mencari film yang semakin jarang ditemukan (khususya di Indonesia), ternyata memotret dengan kamera polaroid dan merasakan kertas polaroid itu keluar dari kamera tetap menjadi romantisme sendiri. Ketika dunia digital semakin menggila dan keinstanan yang “sebenarnya” mungkin telah ada, kamera polaroid tetap ada di hati orang-orang yang terlanjur jatuh cinta pada keunikan kamera ini.

Ide tentang kamera instan ini pertama kali muncul dari Edwin H. Land, seorang ilmuwan, penemu dan juga founder dari perusahaan Polaroid ini. Sejak ia menemukan teknologi fotografi sekali jadi ini tahun 1947, ia dipertemukan dengan Ansel Adams oleh Clarence Kennedy, rekan bisnis Land yang juga seorang sejarawan. Nama Ansel Adams tentu tak asing bagi penggemar fotografi, ia adalah seorang fotografer jenius yang terkenal dengan karya-karya foto landscape hitam putihnya. Land bekerjasama dengan Adams karena menyadari bahwa teknologi instant photography ini tidak akan berarti tanpa adanya potensi-potensi kreatif dari para pelaku dan penggemar seni. Semacam perkawinan antara seni dan industri. Adams pun ditunjuk untuk menjadi co-worker Polaroid Coorporation yang bertugas sebagai artist consulant.

Dari sinilah proyek besar itu dimulai, Adams mulai mengumpulkan seniman-seniman besar macam David Hockney, Helmut Newton, Jeanloup Sieff, and Robert Rauschenberg untuk berkreasi dengan kamera polaroid. Land dan Adams percaya bahwa hasil foto-foto dengan kamera polaroid pun patut mendapat penghargaan di museum atau galeri seni. Dipromotori oleh Land, Adams mengajak dan mengumpulkan karya-karya foto polaroid dari seniman-seniman muda potensial. Karya yang tak terhitung banyaknya dikurasi kembali oleh Barbara Hitchcock dan diterbitkan dalam satu buku berjudul “The Polaroid Book” yang berisikan 400 karya fotografi dari beragam seniman. Selain mengurasi, Barbara juga menulis semacam pengantar tentang sejarah polaroid sampai kisah mengapa buku ini bisa diterbitkan.

Melihat satu per satu karya-karya di buku ini membuat mulut saya menganga. Saya tidak menyangka dari kamera instan yang dulu mungkin cuma kita bayangkan dipakai oleh mas-mas  di monas untuk memotret turis ternyata bisa menghasilkan karya seni yang menakjubkan. Ya, menakjubkan! Simak beberapa karya yang ada di buku ini.

Karya-karya ini hanya sedikit dari lebih banyak lagi karya-karya yang rumit dan mengagumkan dalam buku ini, ada beragam konsep dan eksperimen yang kreatif bertebaran. Bagi sebagian seniman, film polaroid adalah kanvas yang belum selesai. Beberapa diantaranya menggambar di atas kertas polaroid atau mengutak-atik proses transfer yang terjadi sebelum film keluar sehingga terciptalah warna-warna yang aneh dan indah, memberi kita sebuah pengalaman visual baru yang menakjubkan. Dari sinilah cita-cita Edwin H. land telah tercapai, ketika kamera Polaroid berhasil mengahsilkan karya seni yang patut disejajarkan dengan karya seni lainnya.

Lantas seperti apakah nasib Polaroid Corporation saat ini? Pada tahun 2002 perusahaan ini mengalami kebangkrutan dan asetnya dibeli oleh One Equity Partners (OEP). OEP pun mengganti nama Polaroid Corporation menjadi Polaroid Holding Company. Sejak saat itu, PHC mengeluarkan produk-produk seperti LCD plasma tv, DVD portable, kamera digital dan alat-alat eektronik lainnya. Tahun 2008, PHC mengumumkan bahwa mereka akan mengurangi produksi film Polaroid dan pelan-pelan akan menghentikannya. Selanjutnya, Polaroid corporation dibawah PHC mengeluarkan produk PoGo atau instan foto printer seukuran kartu kredit, semacam Polaroid tapi versi digital.

Hal ini tentu mengecewakan banyak pihak, khususnya para pencinta kamera Polaroid. Kekhasan film instan yang unik tidak dapat digantikan digital manapun karena ada eksotisme sendiri merasakan kertas film keluar dan voila!, beberapa detik kemudian muncullah foto kita. Keaslian foto Polaroid juga menjadi salah satu keunggulannya karena kita tidak akan pernah bisa menghasilkan dua foto yang persis sama dengan kamera ini. Ini sangat berbeda dengan file digital yang membuat kita bisa mencetak foto berkali-kali. Dalam beberapa forum saya membaca bahwa ada orang-orang yang masih peduli dengan keberlangsungan Polaroid sehinga mereka membuat petisi untuk tidak menghentikan produksi kamera dan film Polaroid. Tapi bagaimana output dari aksi ini, saya pun belum mengetahui kelanjutannya.

Sayang sekali jika kamera dan film Polaroid memang harus punah. Menggunakan kamera Polaroid bukan lagi semata masalah teknis tapi juga masalah perasaan, bagimana kita telah dibuat jatuh cinta oleh kamera instan yang mungkin sudah “kalah instan” lagi ini. (Gita)
